Labor Day Memorial Open

Honoring Ed Hutchens September 3-4, 2005

By Charles M. Unruh

Dave Zelnick, a Tulsa University Law Student, won the LDMO this year with 4 wins, 1 draw and no losses.  Dave was the clear first place with Chris Talbot, Chuck Unruh and Tyler Madsen all tied for 2nd place with 4 points.

Although many higher rated players attended the downtown Tulsa Okie Fest invitational, the level of LDMO competition was fierce with lots of friendship, fun and upsets.  Class plaques were won by Tyler Madsen top “B”, Chris Talbot top “C”, David Scroggins top “D”, Marckx Austin top “F” and best Unrated to Jim Bedenbaugh. A total of 37 players made the LDMO one of the best attended independent events in Oklahoma chess history.  I appreciate everyone’s support for this event and the help that I received from the OCA, OCF and DAD.

I am scheduling the event for next year and plan to honor another Oklahoma chess patron that is no longer with us. Mark your calendars and plan to play in the LDMO in 2006.

It’s back to school for now, but during the breaks I am entering the LDMO 2005 games on the OCA website.  I look forward to organizing more chess tournaments in Oklahoma!

Thanks again,

Charles M. Unruh
