SUPERNATIONALS III REPORT

 

Thirty-one Oklahoma scholastic chess players were among the world record breaking 5,271 that competed in 19 sections at the USCF SuperNationals III in Nashville, Tennessee on 8-10 April. Sixteen of the Oklahoma players were from Monte Cassino in Tulsa, competing in 7 sections. Several Oklahoma players also played in the huge blitz and bughouse side events the day before the tournament. The OSCO hospitality room near the two large playing halls was a busy place throughout most of the 3-day main event.

 

Three Oklahoma players brought home trophies with 5 of 7 possible points, including:
DUSTIN BENNETT of Central Middle School at Edmond in the K-6 U1000 section;
IAN STANSELL of Oliver Middle School at Broken Arrow in the K-12 U900 section; and
DANIEL PERRY of Monte Cassino in the K-1 Open section.

 

Three other players had plus scores in the event, including:

JORDAN SWARTZ of Cascia Hall at Tulsa with 4.5 points in the K-12 U1500 section;

DESTINY SAWYER of King’s Pawns Homeschoolers with 4 points in the K-12 Open section; and

ALLEN MAKER of Central Middle School at Edmond with 4 points in the K-6 U1000 section.

 

CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL of Edmond was in the K-6 U1000 Team trophies, placing 15th among 34 teams. The CMS team included Dustin Bennett, Matt Karber, Allen Maker and Justin Manhalter.

 

Oklahoma Senior TD Mike Swatek assisted National TD Ernie Schlich directing the 525 player K-5 U900 section, which was the largest section in the event.
