Hello Oklahoma Chess Enthusiasts,
Snow for Christmas is unusual in Northeast Oklahoma and the weatherman promises ample amounts of the white stuff for Christmas Eve. By Saturday, the road crews should clear the highways in time for Jim Berry’s annual Holiday Open Chess Tournament held in Stillwater. Jim Berry and OCF team host the last tournament of the year and could use our support on a cold winter day.
What a wonderful year for Oklahoma Chess. I once thought the OCF was overly active owing to an ongoing dispute, but history and certainly the last two years of chess peace tell a different story. Instead, Chess activity has only moved forward with the combined efforts of all the Oklahoma Chess organizations.
If you missed the news, two Oklahoma chess juniors placed 5th and 8th in the High School section at the National USCF Tournament held in Dallas mid month. Former State Champion, Devin Hughes and the current State Blitz Champion, David Luscomb finished in the top ten and brought home trophies from the Championship. Way to go!
OCA is already looking forward to 2010 with several events. The State Championship is booked for June 26 and 27th in Tulsa with a near record prize fund. Mark the calendar and enjoy some warmer weather summer chess fun. Likewise, Chess Adventure is also scheduled for July at the Rejoice Christian Schools in Owasso. The tournament schedule was full in 2009 and 2010 promises just as many events.
From National Events to Okie Fest to Chess Adventure to OSCO Grand Prix events to the OCA State Championship, the year in Oklahoma Chess has been stellar. My many thanks to the volunteers, players, teachers, parents, organizers and tournament directors that made Oklahoma a great place to play Chess in 2009.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Best Wishes from the OCA Policy Board,
Chuck Unruh
President, Oklahoma Chess Association

Hello Oklahoma Chess Fans,
There have been some notable updates to the site. Most are listed on the "What's New" page. Hope you've been enjoying the OCB. Check out the latest tournament schedule to see where you can next ply your OK chess skills!

1) We had some problems with the HTML PGN viewer we implemented earlier. While it was a capable viewer, it could not (did not, by default) display embedded comments / analysis correctly. Parallel to that, I was fortunate enough to acquire ChessBase - which greatly simplifies generation of interactive games suitable for web display!
By the way, ChessBase Light 2009 is available for free from ChessBase. (Click the link to go to the page) We recommend ChessBase Light to prepare games to send to the webmaster for publication on our site and / or in the OCB. Enjoy!
2) Speaking of games, some new ones have been posted. Click here! Someone recently noted that the vast majority of games online are submitted by one person. This is true, but it's an effect not a policy! I have never NOT posted a submitted game because I didn't "like it" or because it came from "Joe Member" or any subjective reasons like that. Occasionally there are technical reasons (corrupted or simply incorrect PGN, etc.) which prevent a game / library from being posted. If it's not replayable, I won't post it! If you have games from recent events - that we don't already have posted - please send them along! Again, Chessbase is preferred format, but PGN is fine, too. Just bear in mind - with PGN, anything other than the game info tags and the moves themselves will probably not be visible in PGN games. So don't pain yourself analyzing a game if you're sending it in PGN. The analysis doesn't have to be profound. Indeed, it's preferred to be 'plain English' -- "I had less than a minute left on my clock and the alarm going off in the closed hotel bar next to the tournament room distracted several players..." or simply "On move 11, I misjudged my opponent's ability, I was anticipating he'd take the pawn just as he did in our earlier game, but instead he played NxBe5..." or whatever. No need to go 30 moves deep per turn in your analysis.
[Game notes: Added Sunday, Septemeber 13, 2009 13:45 - I just added 6 games from the US Senior Open. click here to view them! Contributed by Chuck Unruh. --PFF / webmaster ]
3) Other changes / updates include photos from the 64th Oklahoma Open State Championship, compliments of Mr. Tubbs and Mr. Rine.
4) Numerous asthetic / "administrivia" updates, including fixed broken link to Interactive Games page from certain other pages. Please let me know if you find broken links anywhere! Don't assume I know about them! ;-)
Coming Soon:
I'm always working on the next edition of the OCB. Now's your chance to see your story / article / photos published! Let me know what you have!
Remember, the OCA web site and the Oklahoma Chess Bulletin are your portals to chess in Oklahoma. If it's not doing what you want, then please let us know what you'd like to see.
Feel free to contribute games, photos, stories, etc.
