OCA Secretary’s Report – 25 June 2006

OCB and Website – Collaboration of the Board Members and other much appreciated contributors.

Board Meetings: The Policy Board has had 3 Board Meetings on roughly quarterly intervals since the last Annual Meeting. Minutes of all meetings are posted at www.ochess.org/governance.

OCB – Two issues published since in the last year on approximately 5 month intervals, with expanded editions also available on the OCA website at www.ochess.org.

Websites – The OCA home page at www.ochess.org has had over 23,227 visits since 8 Jul 03 with about 27 visits per day currently.  The OSCO home page at www.okschess.org has had over 20,279 visits since 1 Jan 2003 with about 26 visits per day currently. 

Tournaments – 5 OCA membership required tournaments were conducted, including:

12 Nov 05 Oklahoma Blitz Championship with 6 participants

12-13 Nov 05 Oklahoma Class Championship with 23 participants

28-19 Jan 06 OKC Winter Open with 31 participants

6 May 06 Oklahoma Quick Chess Championship with 23 participants

24-25 Jun 06 Oklahoma Open State Championship with 47 participants

The OCA also supported the following 6 tournaments with website and email promotion:

3 Jun 06 Tulsa Summer Open with 26 participants

20 May 06 Jenks Spring Open with 34 participants

22 Apr 06 Red River Shootout with 40 participants

*25 Mar 06 Enid Open with 34 participants

11 Mar 06 Tulsa Open with 56 participants (1-day tournament Oklahoma record)

*3-4 Sep 05 Labor Day Memorial Open Honoring Ed Hutchens with 37 participants

*Other tournaments were scheduled in conflict with two tournaments in the last year.

Membership –

OCA: 101 total as of 25 June 06, including 29 Patrons and 31 Youth Members. The OCA decision to conduct 1/2 as many OCA required tournaments, to make more room for Independent tournaments, has resulted in a 1/5 membership decline overall. (124 was total 25 June 05, including 22 Patrons and 41 Youth Members).

OSCO: 401 Additional OSCO free memberships from six OSCO events with 141, 212 (record Grade Championship), 164, 229 (State Record), 204 and 236 participants at the State Championship (State Record). There are many more OSCO adult volunteer members with scholastic clubs across the state, with more being added frequently. In 2006-7, OSCO will have eight Grand Prix events.

USCF: 739 Oklahoma members with a 3 year growth rate that is 10% more than the USCF overall. 317 of these memberships were processed by OSCO in the last year.

Other –  Jim Gray and Chuck Unruh were delegates again at the USCF Annual Meeting last August.

OSCO provided $1000 in scholarships for Oklahoma Scholastic Open Champions to participate in 2006 National Scholastic Tournaments. Also, the OSCO Grand Prix awarded a total of $1186 divided evenly among 4 grade grouping winners for chess training and tournament expenses.

As of this evening, 3 college 529 scholarships totaling $1000 will have been donated and awarded to 900+ rated players in open tournaments for all ages.
